What is the difference between excess weight and excess fat?

A

Excess weight does not necessarily equate to excess fat. Often, excess weight is due to fluid retention or edema rather than fat accumulation. To lose 1g (0.0 oz) of human fat, one must expend an additional 7,000 to 9,000 calories beyond their daily norm. Therefore, rapid weight loss is often attributed to the loss of excess fluid rather than fat.
