What is the availability heuristic?
The availability heuristic is a cognitive shortcut that helps individuals estimate probabilities based on how easily they can recall instances of an event. Introduced by Amos Tversky and Daniel Kahneman in 1973, it suggests that if examples come to mind readily, we perceive the event as more frequent, and if examples are hard to recall, we estimate it as less frequent.
