A classic example of survivorship bias is the case of World War II aircraft engineers who assessed bullet holes on returning planes to determine where to add armor. They mistakenly concluded to reinforce the most-hit areas, whereas the correct approach was to reinforce areas with no hits, as those planes did not survive to be analyzed.
