Why You Should Stop Using Antiperspirant Deodorants
Antiperspirants block sweat glands in your armpits — the area responsible for up to 50% of lymphatic toxin excretion. Here's what that does to your body, and the alternative that actually works without the consequences.
The lymphatic system is an open circuit responsible for collecting and removing everything the body needs to eliminate: cellular metabolic waste, undigested metabolites, heavy metals, pathogens. It moves this fluid to lymph nodes, which produce immune cells, and eventually expels waste products through mucous membranes and — critically — through sweat glands.
The armpits contain a high density of sweat glands and represent a primary excretion route. Through the axillary area alone, the body expels up to 50% of its lymphatic toxin load. The groin is second.
What Antiperspirants Do
Antiperspirant deodorants work by blocking sweat glands — physically sealing them with aluminium compounds or similar agents. Some formulas claim 24-hour or even 72-hour effectiveness.
By blocking the sweat glands, you're also blocking the route through which the lymphatic system is clearing waste from your body. The lymph has nowhere to go. It backs up. Long-term, this contributes to:
- Lymphatic edema in the armpit region
- Hidradenitis (inflammation of the sweat glands, colloquially "boils" or abscesses in the armpit)
- General lymphatic stagnation contributing to broader systemic edema
If you have a predisposition to hidradenitis — recurring inflamed lumps in the armpit — switching away from antiperspirants is step one. Stop blocking the glands and let the lymphatic system do its job.
What Salt Deodorants Are
Salt deodorants (crystal deodorants) use mineral salts — typically potassium alum — which create an inhospitable environment for the bacteria that cause body odour. They don't block sweat glands. Perspiration still occurs, but the bacterial breakdown that creates the unpleasant smell is inhibited.
The result: you may feel moisture under the arms, but the odour is controlled without interfering with the lymphatic system's function.
They work. Tested through regular gym training and daily use — the odour control is adequate, and the lymphatic system is left to function normally.
Practical Notes
Salt crystal deodorants are widely available online and in health stores. Apply after showering to clean skin. They don't produce the same complete dryness as an antiperspirant, but they're effective.
If you're prone to hidradenitis or notice swollen lymph nodes or recurring armpit inflammation: switch immediately. The change alone is often enough to reduce the frequency of flare-ups significantly.
