Q

Why is citrulline preferred over arginine for supplementation?

A

Citrulline is preferred because oral L-arginine is extensively metabolized in the gut and liver, resulting in low bioavailability due to the first-pass effect. In contrast, L-citrulline bypasses this limitation, has high oral bioavailability, and is converted to arginine in the kidneys, effectively raising plasma arginine levels more than oral arginine supplementation.
