Total testosterone measures the aggregate amount of testosterone in the bloodstream, including both bound and unbound forms. Free testosterone, on the other hand, is the small percentage, approximately 2-3%, that is not bound to any carrier proteins and is immediately bioavailable to tissues with androgen receptors.
