What is the difference between ketosis and ketoacidosis?

A

Ketosis and ketoacidosis are mechanistically different. Ketosis occurs when insulin is present and functioning, allowing the body to produce ketone bodies safely for energy. In contrast, ketoacidosis occurs when insulin is absent or severely impaired, leading to an uncontrolled accumulation of ketone bodies and a dangerous drop in blood pH.
