Opinion polarization occurs when individuals on opposing sides of an issue become more extreme in their views after discussing mixed evidence. Each side tends to accept information that supports their perspective without critique while heavily scrutinizing opposing arguments. As a result, rather than moving toward a consensus, debates often lead to greater division and entrenchment of beliefs.
