How does serotonin affect mood and mental health?
Serotonin is often referred to as the 'happiness hormone' because it is linked to feelings of well-being and happiness. Low levels of serotonin are associated with mood disorders such as depression. However, measuring serotonin levels in the blood does not accurately reflect its concentration in the brain, where it acts as a neurotransmitter. Therefore, a blood test showing low serotonin levels does not necessarily indicate depression.
