Can you explain the two phases of the neural response to a recognized mistake?

A

Certainly. The first phase, occurring within 50–150 milliseconds post-error, involves the anterior cingulate cortex generating an Error-Related Negativity (ERN) signal, which alerts us to the error automatically. The second phase, 200–500 milliseconds post-error, is where the frontal cortex evaluates the error's significance, and this phase is modifiable, allowing for conscious adjustments in behavior.

This is one answer. The complete system — the psychology, the biology, and the method — is in the book.
