Surrender, or capitulation, occurs when a person accepts their schema as true and behaves in ways that reinforce it. For example, if someone believes 'I am incompetent,' they may avoid serious attempts at achievement, which paradoxically provides a sense of comfort by removing the uncertainty of failure.
