Q

Can serotonin levels be measured accurately?

From 5 years of verified research · Vassili Sandqvist
A

Measuring serotonin levels in the blood is not a reliable indicator of its levels in the brain, where it exerts its primary effects as a neurotransmitter. Blood tests may show low or high levels of serotonin, but these do not correlate with mood disorders or mental health conditions. Therefore, clinical assessments of mood and behavior are more effective for diagnosing conditions related to serotonin imbalance.
